It’s intriguing when rival or other college football fans anticipate a significant decline for Michigan football in the upcoming 2024 season. There’s an expectation for some level of regression considering the Wolverines’ remarkable national championship victory in a flawless 15-0 season. Such consecutive undefeated seasons are rare in college football history, with no program achieving this feat before.

Adding to the challenge is Michigan’s daunting schedule. However, if the Wolverines manage to secure 9-10 victories in the upcoming season, they stand a solid chance of securing a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.
While uncertainties loom, particularly regarding the quarterback position, with the offensive line undergoing a complete overhaul from last season’s top six players, the Wolverines remain exceptionally talented in that area. This underscores the remarkable coaching prowess of Sherrone Moore, who, having excelled as the O-line coach, is poised to reap the rewards in his new role as head coach.
Furthermore, Moore’s team will benefit from what could arguably be the best defense in college football. Michigan boasts three potential first-round picks in Will Johnson, Mason Graham, and Kenneth Grant. Johnson and Graham would likely be top-20 picks if eligible for this year’s draft.
Pro Football Focus unveiled its Preseason All-American lineup, which highlighted Johnson and Graham. Interestingly, Grant’s absence from the list came as a surprise to me. Despite this snub, Michigan football stood out as the sole team with two players represented. Therefore, the anticipated significant decline by rival fans is improbable, particularly with one of the premier defenses in college football at Michigan’s disposal.
