Despite entering the NBA five years apart, Phoenix Suns standout Bradley Beal and Boston Celtics veteran Jayson Tatum’s careers will be inextricably linked. Beal and Tatum have been close friends since infancy, growing up in St. Louis and attending the same high school, and they are now two of the NBA’s top pure scorers.
Despite the fact that their careers have taken dramatically different trajectories (Beal has yet to play for a true contending club, whereas Tatum has battled for the title with the Celtics practically every year of his career), their connection has grown stronger. In fact, the Suns star detailed how close Tatum is to his three sons and how, despite being one of the world’s most renowned people, the Celtics forward still makes time to check in on Beal and his family.
“He’s a busy superstar, but he makes time to check in with my guys. He spends time with them, shooting baskets together. It does not matter. He goes above and above for the children. “Jay loves the kids, and I’m glad they have such a positive role model,” Beal told Andscape’s Marc J. Spears.

Bradley Beal and Jayson Tatum, both from St. Louis, attended Chaminade High School. Beal graduated in 2012, while Tatum graduated in 2017. In fact, just to reinforce the connection, Beal’s mother used to be Tatum’s mother’s physical education teacher. Tatum and Beal never played together in high school, but the Celtics star joined the Suns guard’s AAU club, which strengthened their friendship even more. The Celtics player dubbed Beal the “perfect role model,” demonstrating how important the two have been to one another.
“He’s a fantastic brother to me, and it’s wonderful to see him develop into parenthood and embrace that role. And then his ability to be kind and have a life outside of basketball,” Beal continued. Since they grew up in the same area, Beal has taken on the role of Tatum’s older brother, pulling for his success wherever he goes. The two had the potential to play together for Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but the Suns guard contracted COVID-19, forcing him out of action.
Unlike Jayson Tatum and the Celtics, who are on track to secure home court advantage throughout the playoffs, Bradley Beal and the Suns are still fighting for postseason positioning in the Western Conference. Beal has had an injury-plagued 2023-24 season. He has only played 44 games this season due to a variety of injuries, and he is averaging the lowest stats of his career since the 2015-16 season, owing in large part to his status as Phoenix’s third option.
