The AFC North squad is in dire need of a quarterback to replace starting Kenny Pickett in the Steel City, as the latter had a sophomore slump that ultimately damaged the Wild Card playoff team. Both parties find this transaction intriguing because the Bears will almost certainly select a rookie quarterback to start for them in 2024. Based on a mock draft by CBS Sports, the Bears are expected to choose USC standout quarterback Caleb Williams with the first overall choice.
On paper, the move seems good for both sides. The Steelers acquire a quarterback to challenge Pickett for the starting job, while the Bears gain a cache of draft picks that may include a first-round pick. If this trade goes through, the Steelers will have the No. 20 choice in the draft, which might go to the Bears.
With head coach Matt Eberflus leading the team into his third season of rebuilding, the Bears would prefer to have as many draft picks as possible. The draft picks from this trade would be extremely helpful in getting the Bears back on track toward contending for the NFC North crown, since there are still many gaps on this squad that need to be filled.
