Eddie Howe rebukes Anthony Gordon’s assertion following Newcastle United’s surprise exit.
Eddie Howe has confessed that the timing of Newcastle United fans’ favourite Allan Saint-Maximin was ideal for both the player and the club. During his four-year spell at St James’ Park, the former Nice and Saint-Etienne winger became a popular figure among the club’s fans. After being one of Steve Bruce’s few highlights, many expected the French talent to become a prominent light for the Magpies following the club’s acquisition by the PIF in October 2021.
United’s ongoing battle with UEFA’s financial fair play regulations forced their hand last summer, when Saint-Maximin joined the Saudi Pro League for a reported £23 million, joining Liverpool cult hero Roberto Firmino, Manchester City treble winner Riyad Mahrez, and former Newcastle transfer target Gabri Veiga at Al-Ahli.

The impact of Saint-Maximin’s departure to the Gulf State has been mitigated by Anthony Gordon’s outstanding form, as the former Everton star scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions this season, putting United in contention for an immediate return to Europe and earning his first call-up to the England senior squad.
However, in an Overlap interview with Manchester United and England great Gary Neville, Howe refuted reports that the sale of ‘totally maverick’ Saint-Maximin was motivated by a desire to bring in the type of winger with whom he has worked throughout his managerial career.
“Not necessarily on that individual circumstance,” Howe responded to a question about the Frenchman’s manner, which led to a departure. “Maxi was a player I simply adored. Yes, he was a little different from the traditional wingers I’ve had in the past. An absolute maverick, a magician with the ball, but we had to accommodate him and his talents and flaws as a team.
“I like working with him. Financial Fair Play was hitting us, so we had to let Maxi go for the time being. I believe it was time for him to depart as well. And then, of course, you’re seeking to replace a guy who made a difference, and you can never go like for like; I don’t know another Allan Saint-Maximin with his abilities, so you have to go with someone different.”
