Jack Hendry examines the difference between Rangers manager Philippe Clement and Steven Gerrard.
Jack Hendry has opened up about the differences between playing under Philippe Clement and Steven Gerrard. The Belgian signed the former Celtic defender for Club Brugge for more than £6 million after shining for Oostende. The couple only worked together for a few months when the manager was hired by Monaco after winning two league titles and a cup with Brugge. But Hendry cherished their brief time together after having that faith instilled in him. The 28-year-old got the chance to go up against some superstars in the Champions League which was important for his growth but he also credits Clement for aiding him enormously with a lot of one-to-one training.
It has been generally reported that the Belgian has numerous private talks with players, which appeared to work well for the Scotland player. “He signed me,” Hendry explained. “He’s had a huge role in my development. At the time, I was grateful to him; the Champions League experience had also improved my game significantly. “He was quite good to me. I had a lot of one-on-ones with him, and he showed me footage of different centre-halves and what he thought I could achieve. He really believed in me.

“I was unhappy that his career was cut short when he moved to Monaco, but his pedigree speaks for itself, and he is an excellent manager. He’s just an excellent coach. He understands the game and has the desire to win, a winning mentality. “We’re kind of similar in that way, he was very driven and wanted to succeed, and I think all of the players looked up to him and listened to him when he spoke, and appreciated him.”
Hendry is now playing for former Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard, which he enjoys although admitting there are changes. He continued, “The manager, Gerrard, has been really friendly to me as well. He believes in me, and he has been spot on with me since I arrived. “He played a significant role in my decision to move to Saudi Arabia; I’m not sure if I would have done it if he hadn’t been the manager, but he and his coaching staff have been quite helpful. “Again, a different way of playing, but I’m really enjoying playing under him.”
“Gerrard’s career speaks for itself. He was a captain and a focal point for Liverpool. He still is, and his winning attitude can be seen every day in training and during games. His standards are quite high, and it is a pleasure to play under him.”
