Georgia Football has returned, albeit partially. Today marked the commencement of spring practice for the Dawgs, prompting Kirby Smart to engage with the media, a task he’s famously known for not particularly enjoying.
No groundbreaking revelations emerged from the press conference, as is typically the case (similar to 99.9% of them). However, we did receive updates on the injured players who will have limited participation or be sidelined for the entirety of spring practice.
- Bo Hughley –shoulder, out for spring
- Tyrion Ingram– Dawkins –foot, out for spring
- Kris Jones– toe, limited
- Christen Miller– meniscus, limited
- Smael Mondon– foot, out for spring
- Branson Robinson–knee
- DeMello Jones– hamstring, limited
- Malaki Starks–shoulder, limited
- Rara Thomas– foot, limited
Additionally, Pearce Spurlin was forced to retire due to a heart condition. The second-year player, who appeared in six games last season, making three receptions for 60 yards, had hoped for increased playing time and a more substantial impact on the field. Despite this unfortunate development, Spurlin will remain involved with the team in some capacity and will retain his scholarship.

Coach Smart also outlined the objectives for the 2024 season and spring practice. Smart articulated the aim to bolster the roster with competitive football players. For those seeking clarity in coach-speak, here’s what Kirby implied: “Many players on the roster lack experience and are young; our task is to prepare them to contribute reliably when called upon.”
Kirby emphasized the influx of new talent on the Dawgs’ roster during this press conference. Nearly one-third of the team comprises freshmen or transfers, a point of concern highlighted repeatedly during Smart’s interaction with the media.
Regarding the addition of four new position coaches to his staff, Smart underscored their familiarity with the standards expected at Georgia. Each new coach has ties to either Saban or Smart, indicating a thorough understanding of the coaching process and the expectations placed upon them.
For many teams, having 33% of their roster composed of newcomers and introducing four new position coaches would pose significant challenges. However, Georgia is gearing up for another championship pursuit, which leads us to the final point from the press conference.
Smart emphasized that each season represents a fresh start, emphasizing that the team has fully moved on from the 2023 season. Despite the Dawgs’ impressive 12-0 regular-season record and exclusion from the 4-team CFP Playoffs (not that it bothers them, allegedly!), Smart’s assertion may sound like typical coach-speak to some, but I’m inclined to take his word for it.
The annual objective for the Dawgs is to bring a national championship back to Athens. Despite having a third of his roster filled with new players, Smart and his team understand that winning championships is the standard at Georgia.
