Sean Magee is appointed general manager of Michigan football.
In addition to adding a new employee, the Michigan football team created a new role: general manager. It’s Sean Magee, who spent the previous two seasons as Chief of Staff for the Chicago Bears after joining the Michigan team from 2017 to 22.

ANN ARBOR, MI Sherrone Moore, the head football coach of the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family, revealed on Wednesday, March 6, that Sean Magee has been hired as the general manager of the University of Michigan team. After serving as the Chicago Bears’ chief of staff in 2022 and 2023, Magee is back in Ann Arbor.
Magee will supervise all facets of the player personnel and recruitment departments in his capacity as Senior Associate Athletic Director and General Manager. He will also handle the program’s NIL projects. Together with the head coach and staff, he will be in charge of locating, assessing, and recruiting potential student-athletes. He will also oversee the present student-athlete roster and determine the program’s future needs.
As part of his job with the Bears, Magee worked closely with the football operations department, general manager, and head coach to carry out the team’s operational and strategic goals. All in-season practices, games, off-season activities, and post-season staff and player evaluations were planned and overseen by him. Magee was in charge of the distribution and management of several budget categories and served as a crucial advisor for all off-field issues. He also served as administrator of the NFL Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship Program and a member of the club’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council.
During his first tenure at Michigan, Magee worked with the football program for five seasons (2017–22). After working as the program’s Director of Player Personnel in his first year, he was elevated to Associate Athletic Director for Football during his last four seasons. In addition to overseeing and directing the football program in its off-field facets, such as player personnel department management, football operations, and budget administration for all football-related activities, Magee served as the Wolverines’ liaison to the athletic director and senior leadership team. He also functioned as the NFL liaison for the program.

Magee spent five seasons (2012–2016) as the U.S. Naval Academy’s Director of Player Personnel before moving to Ann Arbor. During the most successful five-year span in program history, Magee was instrumental in molding and overseeing the team’s roster when he was at Navy.
Magee earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004. Magee was a member of the offensive line that led the country in rushing in the 2003 season while he was a player at Navy from 2000 to 2003. Along with that, Magee was a part of the program’s first bowl game squad since the 1996 campaign and led the Midshipmen to their first Commander in Chief’s Trophy since 1981.
Magee received multiple honors and decorations throughout his tenure as an Active Duty Naval Officer from 2004 to 2012 after graduating from the Academy. He deployed to the Arabian Gulf as a Division Officer aboard the USS Juneau in Sasebo, Japan, to assist Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. He also led a small boat unit in maritime pirate interdiction activities off the coast of Africa. In addition, Magee worked as the Operations Officer for Navy Recruiting District Ohio and as a manpower/personnel analyst on the staff of the Commander, Naval Surface Forces in Coronado, California. Later, in 2012, he graduated with a Master of Business Administration from the Mason School of Business at the College of William & Mary.
Magee, who is a member of the athletics hall of fame at Lake Oswego High School in Oregon, is originally from Belmont, California. In addition to one daughter, Stella, Magee and his wife Sarah have five boys: Miles, the twins Brooks and Colt, Lane, and Ace.
