The Boston Celtics have had three head coaches in the past four years, and each of them has led the team to at least the Eastern Conference Finals.
The C’s current bench boss, who worked on the staffs of the previous two, combines intensity and a sophisticated and creative approach defensively with a thoughtful outlook on the complementary nature of basketball and how to manage and motivate his locker room. Brad Stevens, Ime Udoka, and Joe Mazzulla were the right fit for the state of the franchise while they were in charge.
Derrick White and Payton Pritchard were asked to contrast the coaching philosophies of the Celtics’ previous three bench managers during their recent appearance on Pardon My Take, when they also advocated for Blake Griffin to return to the team.
“There’s definitely similarities to all three of them,” said Pritchard, the only person to have a player-coach relationship with each of them. Brad is definitely quite intelligent, yet he seems to be a little more laid back. The mood was more strained.Joe acts as a counterbalance to the two of them. Since he worked for Brad, I believe he took a lot of that stuff, and Joe was already somewhat of a lunatic and mentally incarcerated. Thus, that portion of Ime is also a part of him. He therefore possesses a small amount of both.”
