Under Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, first-round running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire never quite lived up today expectations and became an uncommon draft miss.
The “CEH” era is finally anticipated to come to an end, as the former LSU standout is scheduled to become a free agent for the first time in his NFL career in 2024, following a flurry of trade rumors in recent years.
It’s uncertain whether Veach wants to bring [Jerick] McKinnon back for another year given his age and injury history, Arrowhead Pride analyst Mark Gunnels said to readers on February 24 while talking about the RB room. Furthermore, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, it seems like it’s time for both of them to move on.
While Edwards-Helaire and McKinnon are both eligible to sign free agents in March, the latter is less likely to do so because he has spent the last two seasons playing RB3 behind Isiah Pacheco and McKinnon.
It’s more likely that Veach and head coach Andy Reid would try to replace CEH in the draft or by pushing a less expensive internal option like La’Mical Perine, a former draft pick of the New York Jets, Deneric Prince, a 2023 UDFA, or Keaontay Ingram, a former draft pick of the Arizona Cardinals.
“I do see a world where they could bring back McKinnon on a cheap one-year deal and then draft a guy in the later rounds, a la Pacheco,” Gunnels continued, concluding, “I’m not saying the Chiefs will spend big money on a running back because it just wouldn’t make any sense.”

During the 2023 campaign, Edwards-Helaire enrolled in nursing school, as reported by Marleah Campbell of KCTV5 on January 17.
